There have been several major changes to the national Indian cricket side after their early exit from the latest T20 World Cup. After failing to progress from the group stages, the Indian side are set to ring in a new era. Virat Kohli’s pre-tournament announcement that he would retire after this year’s World Cup T20 edition has set the stage for Rohit Sharma to take over the reigns.
Rohit Sharma, the talismanic opener, will be in charge as India set their sights on New Zealand (World Cup champion hopefuls). There are several players who are missing for the upcoming series; Kohli, Bumrah, and Jadeja are all major names that will be absent. In another twist, Hardik Pandya has been dropped as his downturn in form can no longer be ignored. However, all eyes will be on Rohit as he embraces the new challenge – one that is not entirely new to him – after having captained the side in 19 matches thus far.
Rahul Dravid needs little introduction to the world of cricket. A stalwart of the Indian team in the late 90s and early 2000s. Known as the Wall, he thrived off battling it out in high-pressure situations. Recently, he has been involved in the India A setup as well as the Under/19 team. His own experience and robust approach to the game will stand the senior squad in good stead. There’s no denying his ability and prowess in relation to on-field expectations. However, it will be interesting to see how he shapes up as the man-in-charge ‘behind the scenes’. All the players have massive respect for him and this will only embolden him to engage with each player one-on-one and continue to build on the cohesive team environment left behind by Ravi Shastri.
There are always bound to be changes when a new coach comes into the fold and this is already evident with the squad selection for the next T20 series. A betting man will be sure to back Dravid as he is expected to provide the Indian team with the ability to follow through, not only in bilateral series, but in major ICC events, too. India are no strangers to sitting atop the ICC rankings and we’ll be following their progress with keen interest.
It’ll be fascinating to see how the Indian side bounces back from their recent disappointment. A benchmark test for the entire team as they play an increasingly-strong Black Caps side that seems to grow in confidence with every game. Following this series, India will head to South Africa in an all-out slugfest with test, ODI, and T20 series on the line. A burgeoning South African side has also taken a lot of positives from the latest World Cup and the summer series is set to be an absolute cracker.
