The New York Jets recently signed quarterback Tim Boyle from the practice squad and released wide receiver Irv Charles. The team announced the roster change before the match against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.
The 28-year-old QB has previously participated in 17 NFL games with the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears. He completed 61-of-94 passes for 526 yards, scored three touchdowns and threw six interceptions in 2021 with the Lions.
The team has also signed kicker Austin Seibert to the practice squad. Seibert is elevated along with LB Sam Eguaveon for Sunday’s game due to kicker Greg Zuerlein’s groin injury.
Seibert, one of four kickers who tried out for the team, was expected to serve as a temporary replacement. His career kicking statistics showcased his ability, with a success rate of 90.2 percent on extra points and 80.0 percent on field goals in 30 games, including a long field goal of 53 yards.
The New York Jets have been busy with roster moves and signings for a while now. Since August, they have had several player acquisitions, releases, and practice squad additions.
The Jets signed tackle Grant Hermanns earlier last month while releasing veteran offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste. Hermanns, originally an undrafted free agent with the Jets in 2021, returned to the team after brief stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins.
The team’s next adjustment is waiving running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight, who had shown promise during the previous season. Additionally, they released cornerback Jimmy Moreland, linebacker Pita Taumoepenu, and offensive lineman Greg Senaut.
Later, on the 14th, the Jets placed defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo on injured reserve. To fill the gap, they signed defensive end Jalyn Holmes.
Odenigbo, who joined the Jets in late July, had 90 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 14 sacks in 55 career games. In just one game played, Holmes, formerly with the Bears, contributed immediately with three tackles.
August 16 marked the official signing of running back Dalvin Cook to a one-year deal. While Cook’s arrival was highly anticipated, he was not available for practice due to personal reasons. In a related move, the Jets released cornerback Javelin Guidry, who had suffered a knee injury during a joint practice with the Buccaneers. Guidry’s expected surgery led to his departure from the team.
Toward the end of August, the Jets announced the release of veteran safety Dane Cruikshank and the re-signing of veteran punter Thomas Morstead and fullback Nick Bawden.
These moves followed the placement of offensive tackle Carter Warren and tight end Kenny Yeboah on injured reserve. Morstead’s return was noteworthy, considering his prior unexpected release, while Bawden made a comeback after a year on injured reserve.
The Jets signed ten players to the practice squad by August 30, reinforcing various positions. Other than Boyle, among them were tight end Zack Kuntz, defensive linemen Tanzel Smart, Marquiss Spencer, and offensive lineman Adam Pankey. Linebackers Samuel Eguavoen and Caleb Johnson, cornerbacks Craig James and Nehemiah Shelton, and safety Trey Dean are also in the mix.
