Despite rumors of a draft slide, Stroud received the recognition he deserved, as the Houston Texans selected him second overall in the NFL Draft – with the first overall pick being Bryce Young, chosen by the Carolina Panthers.
The Ohio State quarterback garnered praise from former Ohio State players and NFL players. Following the announcement of his pick, Stroud was overcome with emotions as he hugged his family and friends. The moment captured the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for Stroud, who had always dreamed of playing in the NFL.
Several Ohio State players and NFL players took to Twitter to compliment Stroud. New Orleans Saints’ wide receiver Michael Thomas was quick to offer his support, tweeting, “Talk is cheap @CJ7STROUD” along with the hundred emoji.
Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver A. J. Brown shared his excitement, calling himself a “Big CJ Stroud fan!” Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones added to the chorus of congratulations, expressing his confidence in Stroud’s ability to excel at the next level.
NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah also expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “C.J. Stroud has all the tools to be an elite NFL quarterback. Exciting pick by the Texans.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter praised the Texans’ selection, too, with a tweet that reads, “Texans fans should be thrilled to get Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud at No. 2. He’s a talented QB prospect who has the potential to be a franchise cornerstone.”
KHOU 11 sportscaster Matt Musil shared a clip of fans of the Texans who cheered loudly following Stroud’s pick, along with the tweet, “WOW!! @texans do it!! They select CJ Stroud with the #2 pick, and the fans here react with an explosion of cheers!!”
In 2021 and 2022, C.J. Stroud placed fourth and third in the Heisman Trophy voting. During his tenure as the Buckeyes’ quarterback, he completed 69.3 percent of his passes, throwing for 8,123 yards and 80 touchdowns while only being intercepted 12 times.
The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft also generated a lot of buzz on social media as fans and NFL players shared their opinions on other topics, including the Texans’ daring trade to secure Will Anderson, the unexpected fall of Jalen Carter to the Eagles and Lamar Jackson’s new wide receiver in Baltimore.
The NFL first draft, also known as the NFL Draft or the Annual Player Selection Meeting, is an annual event in which NFL teams select eligible college football players to join their teams. The draft is typically held in late April and consists of seven rounds, with each team having one pick per round based on their record from the previous season.
The purpose of the NFL Draft is to provide a fair and competitive system for distributing young talent among all NFL teams. The selection order for each round is determined by the reverse order of the previous year’s standings, meaning that the team with the worst record from the previous season gets the first pick in each round.
The NFL first draft has become a major event in the United States, with millions of fans tuning in to watch the proceedings on television or online.
The draft is hyped because it represents an opportunity for teams to improve their rosters with talented young players and for fans to get excited about the future prospects of their favorite teams.
