Following Thursday nightâs devastating 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Los Angeles Chargers have fired head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco.
âI want to thank Tom and Brandon for their hard work, dedication and professionalism, and wish both them and their great families nothing but the best,â owner Dean Spanos wrote in an official statement released on social media X. âThese decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly â especially when you consider the number of people they impact.â
Spanos emphasized that the Chargers are currently not meeting his expectations and âneed new vision.â He also explained that âdoing nothing in the name of continuityâ was not a risk he was willing to take.
âOur fans have stood strong through so many ups and downs and close games,â Spanos added. âThey deserve more. Frankly, theyâve earned more.â
With a commitment to âbuilding and maintaining a championship-caliber programâ set to commence immediately, Spanos also announced the appointment of interim head coach Giff Smith and interim general manager JoJo Wooden.
While last Thursday’s defeat at Allegiant Stadium marked a significant low point, speculation about Staleyâs future as head coach had been mounting for weeks.
When questioned about his future with the team after the loss on Thursday game, Staley responded with an uncertain âI donât know.â
âWe just didnât have a good game tonight,â he said. âWe didnât have it from the beginning to the end. Itâs just one of those games where nothing went right for us.â
Under Staleyâs leadership from 2021 to 2023, the team went 24-24 in the regular season. However, his tenure as head coach had been marked by late-season defeats.
In the 2021 season, the Chargers missed the playoffs after a heartbreaking overtime loss in Week 18 against the Raiders. The prior season, the Chargers blew a 27-point lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars and lost 31-30 in the AFC playoffs.
As the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator in 2020, Staley played a pivotal role in propelling the team’s defense to the top of the league in terms of points and total yards allowed. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his career before he ascended to the position of head coach for the Chargers.
Meanwhile, Telesco had been the Chargersâ general manager since 2013, prior to his dismissal. He transitioned from a significant tenure in the Colts front office. While the team remained competitive under his leadership, they couldnât progress beyond the divisional round in 11 seasons of playoffs.
This season, Los Angeles has a 5-9 record, which places them at the bottom of the AFC West. Further adding to their hardships is the absence of star quarterback Justin Herbert, who is out for the season with a broken finger.
Facing a struggling Raiders team that had recently suffered a lackluster 3-0 loss to Minnesota, the Chargers experienced a lopsided defeat. By halftime, Las Vegas had amassed 42 points, leaving the Chargers unable to cross midfield until the third quarter.
The 42-0 halftime score was alarmingly close to the NFL record for the largest deficit of 45-0, set by the New England Patriots against the Tennessee Titans in 2009. It was also the most points the Chargers have ever conceded in the first half of a game in the history of their franchise.
Despite opening the season with a 4-4 record, the Chargers eventually stumbled. The team has lost five of its last six games and is outscored 171-102 during that stretch.
