Earlier on Saturday, sports commentator Adam Schein declared on his CBS Sports Network show that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is incapable of playing football. In response, Packers’ linebacker De’Vondre Campbell fired at him via a Tweet to defend his fellow teammate.
“Ain’t no way you just got on here with that baggy ass Steve Harvey suit and them thick ass dollar tree glasses and disrespected my QB by saying he can’t play football,” Campbell wrote. “He only has one career start, let him play at least half a season before you open your big dumbass mouth.”
Schein responded an hour later by quoting Campbell’s Tweet. In a lighthearted Tweet, he partially defended his wardrobe choices which were insulted.
“Appreciate you sharing! Glasses are awesome. @oliverpeoples. Certainly not a dollar. Sports jacket is @CalvinKlein. It’s great,” Schein wrote. “You are right. From 2019. Should retire. Love color, though. My pleasure voting you first team all-pro two years ago. Have great season!”
During his segment, Schein engaged in a game titled “Love or Loath” and ironically placed Love, the Packers quarterback, into the latter classification.
“I loathe Love,” Schein said. “Despise Love. I mean everyone looks great during preseason practices, except apparently for Jordan Love… Because Jordan Love can’t play football. Simple as that.”
On top of Schein’s recent criticism, Love has also received harsh words from various anonymous NFL coaches.
In the annual QB tier rankings at The Athletic, one offensive coach offered his fairly blunt criticism, saying that Love “doesn’t process the game well enough.”
“I don’t see a natural, smooth, instinctive player, the way he reacts to the defense,” the coach said.
The transition from former quarterback Aaron Rodgers to Love in the Packers’ offense certainly has not been easy. At 24 years old, Love embarks on his fourth season. This season marked his debut as the starting quarterback for the team that drafted him 26th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Throughout these years, Love had been overshadowed by Rodgers, who ultimately parted ways with the Packers this offseason, transferring to the New York Jets.
Picked by the Packers in the first round of the 2020 draft as Rodgers’ heir, Love has started merely one game in his career, which occurred during the 2021 season. He has participated in only 10 games over two seasons.
Many believe what Love needs right now is ample repetition and experience. Green Bay’s initial exhibition match is scheduled for next Friday, August 11, against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Love should take numerous snaps from the center in that game and the subsequent two. Despite spending three years in the Packers’ QB room, he has thrown merely 50 passes in his budding career.
This sample size is quite concerning, considering that Love is tasked with succeeding a Lambeau legend and future Hall of Famer. Although he articulates all the correct sentiments and likely strives to block out external opinions, the pressure will inevitably seep onto the field.
Love’s limited opportunities have revealed little, sparking doubts about his competence as a starting quarterback.
Such a limited sample size does not warrant heavy criticism of Love at this early stage. Furthermore, numerous other factors influence a quarterback’s performance, including the blocking quality and a wide receiver’s capability to create separation.
