Golf’s most prestigious event is set to kick off next week, and golf enthusiasts all over the country are getting ready to lay down their money on their favorite golfers. Odds makers have set the lines, and savvy bettors are already looking for value among a talented field.
All the excitement that usually surrounds this event has taken a back seat to the Tiger Woods watch. Woods’ horrific car accident took place a little more than one year ago, and it would truly be a heroic feat if he is able to return for this year’s Masters tournament. The tournament has been the scene of many landmark moments in Woods’ decorated career. Woods has won the event five times, just one shy of the record held by Jack Nickaluas who won six green jackets. He holds the record as the tourney’s youngest-ever winner, with his 1997 victory coming at the age of just 21. He holds 35 other all-time tournament records, including topping the list of all time Masters money winners, having earned $9,556,069 total in his 23 Masters appearances.
While the golf community wonders if Woods will be able to get on the course, the odds makers are focused on some of the sport’s top young talent. 27-year-old Jon Rahm is a large favorite according to the bookies, sitting at +800 to win outright, and he is even money (+100) to place in the top 15. 25-year-old Scottie Scheffler is the second-most-favored golfer in the field, but sitting at +1400 he trails Rahm by a wide margin and is much closer to the rest of the pack than he is to the favorite. Seven of the top 10 most favored golfers are 28 or younger, with Dustin Johnson the only one over the age of 32.
Some of the legal US sportsbook operators, including DraftKings, have opened up a few prop bets in addition to laying early odds on the favorites. While the selection is limited at the moment with the tournament still more than a week away, there are sure to be many more exciting prop bets offered in the coming days. One of the most popular bets is projected to be head-to-head props, where bettors choose between two different golfers in an effort to predict which one will have the lower score.
Live betting will also be more popular than ever during this year’s Masters. With more Americans than ever having access to legal sportsbooks that feature cutting-edge technology allowing them to wager in real time, there are sure to be a wide array of intriguing options for gamblers to bet on as the tourney progresses.
Sports betting remains illegal in the state of Georgia where the Masters is held. This means that fans in attendance will not be able to place legal sports betting wagers for at least one more year. There is legislation currently in progress that has the potential to legalize sports betting in the state before the 2023 Masters rolls around. If everything goes perfectly, this could be the last Masters tournament where fans are not glued to their phones making wagers while they walk the course.
Die hard and casual golf fans alike anticipate this incredible event every spring. Savvy gamblers are already looking for inefficiencies in the betting odds and analyzing various statistics they hope will predict a victory, while casual fans are gearing up to put down an unprecedented amount of money behind their favorite golfers.
