NFL fines Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown $10,000 for taunting

A $10,000 fine was imposed by the NFL on Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown for taunting two Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs in Sunday’s Week 8 game. Brown raised his fingers at Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick after scoring a touchdown in the second quarter.

It was Brown’s third touchdown of the game, following his first near the end of the first quarter. Brown snagged a pass that appeared to be interceptable. Early in the second quarter, he scored the second touchdown at Witherspoon’s and Fitzpatrick’s expense.

Brown had an impressive day, catching six passes on 10 targets for 156 yards and three touchdowns. The 25-year-old became the first Eagles player in 53 years to score three 25-yard touchdowns in one game, according to John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Steelers vs Eagles

Brown caught three long touchdown passes in the first half alone as the Eagles beat the Steelers 35-13 at Lincoln Financial Field. This showed why the Eagles are the only unbeaten team left. The Steelers’ problems in Philadelphia have now been dragging on for a full 10 years.

“We’ve got to keep a lid on it. If you don’t keep a lid on it in the NFL, you don’t give yourself a chance to play,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. “We didn’t do that, and I thought it was a domino effect from there on.”

In the game, the Steelers, who head into their bye week with a 2-6 record, committed nine penalties, with six of them coming from their offense.

“We’ve got to stop beating ourselves before we do anything,” Steelers running back Najee Harris added.

“We beat ourselves up. We helped the other team by doing the stuff that we do. We have pre-snap penalties. I don’t know if we lead the league in pre-snap penalties, but I think we do.”

NFL policies and regulations

Brown’s performance continues to get him good things. He joked on Twitter that it was the reason the NFL gave him a “random” drug test the next morning. Even though the NFL is known for its random drug tests landing after stellar performances, it is also not a stranger to issuing fines for celebrations.

Brown has been fined three times in his professional career. The previous two occurred in 2020 with the Titans, for excessive celebrations that cost $19,000.

A $13,315.25 fine was imposed on Jamaal Williams earlier this season. This was after the Detroit Lions running back committed unsportsmanlike conduct during the celebration of his touchdown in Week 3, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. Officials flagged Williams after he thrust his hips three times following his second touchdown of the day.

Even though that dollar amount sounds like a lot, it’s only a little more than the fine that Brown probably got for the first time he did something unsportsmanlike. Also, the NFL says that the fines don’t go to them. Instead, the NFL Foundation gives the money to programs that the NFL and NFLPA choose. So, even though Brown says he’ll keep his “hands, feet, and other objects” to himself while playing for the undefeated Eagles (8-0), he can rest easy knowing that his celebrations will help others.

Brown is fifth in the NFL with 718 receiving yards. ESPN Stats & Information reported that he had 100 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in the first half of a game since Mike Evans of Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3.
