After an eventful Wild Card Weekend, the 2023 NFL Playoffs now enter the Divisional Round, with a total of four matches set to commence this weekend.
The first match on Saturday had the Houston Texans taking on the Baltimore Ravens at the M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens emerged on top with a 34-10 victory over the Texans, with quarterback Lamar Jackson leading the charge.
Next on the AFC schedule is the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. Set to take place on the Bills’ home turf on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET, the Chiefs are predicted to succeed despite a shift in the team’s performance.
On the NFC’s side, the San Francisco 49ers were a 10-point favorite against the Green Bay Packers on their matchup for Saturday night. The predictions were proved right when San Fransisco clinched a narrow 24-21 win over the Packers, advancing to play in the NFC Championship Game.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face off against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field to close off the weekend. The victor of this game advances to challenge the 49ers.
Sunday’s eagerly awaited showdown between the Chiefs and the Bills showcases a thrilling quarterback duel, with Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen facing off for the third time in playoff history.
This game marks a significant milestone for Mahomes, as it will be his first playoff appearance on the road. The intensifying rivalry between the two teams, currently at an even 3-3 record, adds another layer of excitement. Their latest encounter in the current season was in Week 14, where the Bills clinched a close 20-17 victory.
The Chiefs enter the game on Sunday fresh off a convincing 26-7 win against the Miami Dolphins. In the previous NFL Wild Card Weekend, they showcased a formidable defense that excelled on third downs during the regular season.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice was a standout performer. He contributed eight catches, 130 yards and a touchdown. His consistent play provides a valuable complement to tight-end Travis Kelce in Mahomes’ passing game.
On the other hand, Buffalo is currently dealing with injuries to key players like linebackers duo Terrell Bernard and Baylon Spector, as well as cornerback Taron Johnson. However, the team remains a strong contender.
Despite the health concerns, the Bills finished the regular season with five consecutive wins, securing the No. 2 seed in the conference. Allen’s MVP-level performance, highlighted by three passing touchdowns and a 52-yard rushing touchdown, adds to Buffalo’s momentum. The status of injured players entering the game will be a key factor to watch.
The final game of the weekend will witness the Lions hosting their second consecutive home playoff game after ending a playoff drought since 1991. Live coverage starts at 2:00 p.m. ET with Football Night in America, and kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. ET.
In a victorious Super Wild Card Weekend, Detroit snapped a nine-game playoff losing streak. Their offense scored touchdowns on the first three possessions against the Los Angeles Rams.
Although the ground defense limited the Rams from scoring in the red zone, the secondary showed vulnerability to the pass. This was evident in Los Angeles’ wide receiver Puka Nacua’s record-breaking 181 yards in that game.
Now, the focus shifts to how the Lions will defend against the Buccaneers’ pass catchers, led by Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Evans had 1,233 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns and 79 receptions this season, while Godwin had 973 receiving yards, two touchdowns and 83 receptions.
Tampa Bay, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, secured a win against the Philadelphia Eagles in the previous round with 337 yards and three touchdowns. The Buccaneers excelled on the road during the regular season, boasting an 8-1 ATS record.
The Lions previously defeated the Buccaneers in Week 6, and the rematch raises questions about a repeat or a potential upset by the resilient Buccaneers.
