The level of online betting activities increased 77% year-over-year for the NFL kickoff game on Thursday night, according to GeoComply. The data was collected before and during the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams, where the Bills defeated the Rams 31-10 on Thursday.
According to data gathered by GeoComply, the number of bets increased from 12.7 million in the season’s opening game last year to a staggering 22.6 million, making this “the biggest season yet.”

One of the useful indicators used to identify sports betting activity—more than 80 percent of which is carried out online in the United States—was the frequency with which GeoComply was asked to confirm a customer’s location.
To place an online sports wager, a user must be physically present within the state’s borders because the data combines a number of factors, including software, cellphone data, and hardware, to determine in which state the user is currently attempting to place a wager.
According to sources, an estimated 23 million of the nearly 47 million people who plan to wager on games during the NFL season this year will do so online, which is 18 percent more than they did last year.
While there have been reports of gamblers placing multiple bets in a single sign-in, there have also been findings of them simply logging in without placing a wager.
According to sources, the state of New Jersey has seen a 550 percent increase in transactions since the start of the 2018 NFL season.
In New York, on the other hand, 3.7 million location checks were made, particularly after they started accepting online bets earlier this year. As a result, New York is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports betting markets in the nation.
A week prior to the kickoff game, Buffalo alone saw 86,400 location checks on Sept. 1. On Thursday, that number rose to 267,600.

DraftKings’ strong performance
Following the Thursday game and the amount of betting activity, DraftKings stock increased 3.77 percent on Friday, marking the company’s fourth straight day of gains. This is a strong performance for DraftKings, especially after the stock has lost nearly 40 percent of its value this year.
DraftKings’ stock increased more than that of its rivals, including Las Vegas Sands Corp., which saw a rise of only 1.38 percent, and MGM Resorts International, which saw a rise of only 2.94 percent.
According to Truist analyst Barry Jonas, early August figures for sports gaming gross revenue trended favorably due to NFL preseason action. Jonas added that in June and July, DraftKings had 27 percent of the market for online sports betting, placing it second, trailing behind FanDuel.
In mid-August, Roth Capital Partners decided to upgrade DraftKings’ rating from Neutral to Buy, reflecting their more upbeat outlook on the company as the NFL season kicks off in Week 1.
Analyst Edward Engel even mentioned that the DraftKings advancements are bringing the company closer to profitability in the foreseeable future. In support of this, Citi’s Jason Bazinet asserted that DraftKings is the market leader, saying,
“We continue to view DKNG as a leading operator in the fast-growing U.S. betting market.”
