Premier League signs new six-year US TV deal worth $2.7 billion

The English Premier League is one of the most watched sports leagues around the world. The league pulls in staggering TV revenue every year as it continues to expand to more countries across the globe. One of the biggest contributors to the rise in EPL popularity across the Atlantic is NBC Sports.

NBC Sports broadcast their first Premier League fixture back in 2013 when they signed their initial deal with the Premier League. Since then they have done phenomenal work in raising the popularity of the league in the US. These sentiments have been echoed by Chief Executive of the Premier League Richard Masters who has heaped praise on NBC Sports for the work they have done in advertising the EPL.

The first contract signed between the Premier League and NBC Sports was so successful that it has ultimately brought about the signing of a new 6-year contract that will see the working relationship between the two continue until 2028. The deal is worth a staggering $2.7 billion which more than doubles the previous deal between the two.

The contract will cover all 380 matches in the league and will even offer Spanish commentary as well. With the previous success of the contract, there is no reason to doubt the contract’s success and growing support of the renewed contract that will surely bring about even more viewership in the US.

A deal enabling growth in the lower leagues

The deal between NBC Sports and the Premier League could not have come at a better time after the pandemic hit the lower leagues of English football the hardest. It was reported that  from the Premier League down to the country’s lower divisions there was a total of £2 billion lost.

The deal will enable the Premier League to pump record breaking revenue into the non-league divisions, the Championship, League 1 and League 2. There is an estimated £1.6 billion investment in the works that will help to revitalize the grassroots levels of football in England while simultaneously boosting the revenues of the professional and semi-professional teams in the country as well. In addition to the TV revenue from the deal with NBC Sports, the Premier League will also contribute a further £20 million to League 1 and League 2 clubs to aid them after the substantial financial losses they took during the pandemic.

A potentially bright future for all parties concerned

The relationship between NBC Sports and the Premier League is one of perfect symbiosis. Both parties are absolutely winning in this deal. The Premier League can now finally give the lower league teams the help they have so desperately been lacking during the pandemic. NBC Sports will undoubtedly rake in the TV revenue as well, as the EPL continues to grow in support in the US. This is more than likely down to the fact that the EPL simply offers more entertainment than the MLS. The gap between the leagues when it comes to finances and what clubs can pay players is stark. Star names continue to pour into the Premier League, making it the strongest league in the world year in and year out.

It would not come as a surprise if we came back to this article in 2028 only to find that the Premier League and NBC Sports had renewed their contract for a 3rd time. It would take a deal too good to refuse for the Premier League to go with a different organization and right now, we can’t see how anyone is going to upset the balance that has been struck between these two massive sporting entities.
