The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 49-30 in their Saturday matchup. The win also snapped Purdueâs losing streak.
The Boilermakers came into the match against the Gophers already in a four-game losing streak but managed to avoid their first five-game losing streak since 2016. At the same time, the Gophersâ loss has made it much more unlikely for Minnesota to be eligible for the seasonâs bowl.
The Boilermakers had over 600 offensive yards in total, with 353 rushing yards and 251 passing. In the first quarter, Gophers tight end Brevy Spann-Ford scored a touchdown after receiving a pass from quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, initially putting Minnesota in the lead.
Purdue stole and maintained the lead after two touchdowns in the first quarter thanks to tight end Garret Miller and wide receiver TJ Sheffield. By halftime, Purdue led the game by 28-20 and continued to rack up points through the third and fourth quarters.
Throughout the game, Boilermakers quarterback Hudson Card passed for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Miller, Sheffield, Devin Mockobee and Deion Burks caught one touchdown pass each for Purdue, while Tyrone Tracy Jr. scored two. Including Cardâs rush for a touchdown, six players reached the end zone for the Boilermakers.
As for the Gophers, Spann-Ford, Chris Autmen-Bell and Elijah Spencer each caught a touchdown pass, with Kaliakmanis completing 18 out of 42 passes for 292 yards.
Purdueâs head coach Ryan Walters praised the teamâs performance, saying they played with discipline and toughness all night. He also praised Card for making good decisions on the field.
âGetting the ball to the right guy on time, throwing the ball with confidence, and then escaping when he needed to escape and understanding where the sticks were in order to move the chains,â Walters said about Card.
Despite the win against Minnesota, Purdueâs victory came too late for the team to be eligible for the seasonâs bowl. For Minnesota, failing to secure the win in their sixth game means the team will need to beat several odds to become bowl-eligible, especially as West Division leader Iowa just won against Rutgers. At the very least, Iowa will need to lose out in a game, while Minnesota must beat both rival Wisconsin and No. 3 Ohio State.
âThey [Purdue] went out there and executed, did a really good job, played really well. Scored a lot of points, partially because of how we played. Offense, defense, and special teams just wasn’t good enough tonight,â said Gophers head coach PJ Fleck following the game.
He added that there were âno excusesâ for his teamâs loss which consequently may dash their hopes of making an appearance in this seasonâs bowl.
âTonight was not fun. I know it was not fun for our players. I hurt for our players. It’s a hurt locker room. They give everything they have. We’re 5-5, 0-1 in the Purdue season. We’ve gotten everything we deserved this year.â
Following the Saturday matchup, the Boilermakers now stand at two wins and five losses in the Big Ten West Division, while the Gophers are down to three wins and four losses. Despite that, Boilermakers head coach Ryan Walters expressed his desire to end the season strong.
âThe next game is important because itâs the next game,â said Walters, commenting on his teamâs upcoming matchup against the Northwestern Wildcats on November 19.
