Russian hockey prodigy Matvei Michkov continues to keep NHL teams in suspense as the draft approaches. Journalist Elliotte Friedman from the Sportsnet network has shed light on the challenges several teams face in their attempts to arrange a meeting with the elusive sensation.
During a recent episode of the “32 Thoughts” podcast, Friedman shared his insights, revealing the difficulties encountered by teams trying to schedule meetings with Michkov, despite their willingness to travel to Russia.
“You try to schedule a date with him, and he’s just not interested,” Friedman said.
Additionally, the journalist disclosed that teams could only communicate with Michkov by approaching him directly after his games. Even then, the player only indulged them in brief conversations.
Amid the intrigue surrounding Michkov’s accessibility, NHL teams speculate if the young talent intentionally influences his future destination. Friedman’s inquiry delves into whether the 18-year-old favors specific teams and if he is discreetly orchestrating his draft outcome.
Nevertheless, teams have encountered many challenges in familiarizing themselves with Michkov. Considering the rumored “character issues” and his substantial KHL contract extending until 2026, many speculate that these factors could cause a decline in his draft value.
Michkov’s absence at the 2023 NHL Combine has also created a sense of ambiguity among teams. The inability to conduct interviews and the lack of test results have only added to the uncertainty surrounding him. However, there is some reassurance as Michkov is set to attend the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville, as confirmed by his agent, Sergei Fedotov.
Co-host Jeff Marek hypothesized that the Washington Capitals could be an ideal match for Michkov if he desires control over the draft process. The Capitals’ strong connections with Russian players, particularly their iconic star Alexander Ovechkin, might appeal to Michkov. He may envision joining forces with Ovechkin to pursue Wayne Gretzky’s goalscoring record.
As the NHL Draft draws near on June 28-29, teams preceding Washington in the draft order, such as the San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers, can bypass Michkov and select a prospect they had the opportunity to meet beforehand.
The Capitals, however, appear convinced that Michkov is the perfect addition to their organization. There is a belief that Michkov is trying to remain available when Washington steps up to the podium with the eighth pick on June 28.
According to recent reports, the St. Louis Blues are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to secure top prospect Michkov in the upcoming 2023 NHL Draft.
General Manager Doug Armstrong is actively exploring trade possibilities to move up in the draft and position the team to select the highly-touted player. With the first round’s 10th, 25th and 29th picks, Armstrong possesses valuable assets that could be packaged to obtain a higher selection.
Despite his young age, the HC Sochi right-winger is widely regarded as one of the standout prospects in a draft class dominated by forward players. Drawing comparisons to the Ovechkin, Michkov’s exceptional offensive skills and astute hockey sense have garnered significant attention from scouts and experts alike.
While he may not be the fastest skater, Michkov compensates with his unparalleled creativity, deft stickhandling and finesse in maneuvering through the offensive zone.
Michkov’s arsenal includes a lethal shot that he can unleash from various angles. The Russian sensation has demonstrated proficiency in wrist shots, backhands and even the audacious lacrosse-style “Michigan” goal. It is this exceptional scoring ability that sets him apart and makes him a potential franchise-altering player.
