When will single-game sports betting launch in Ontario?

Publish Date: 15/02/2022

Since the restructuring of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), new iGaming provisions have been an extremely hot topic across the trillium province.

When will single-game sports betting launch in Ontario?

The amendment could see the lonely Ontario sports betting scene, flooded by a stream of private sportsbooks. Proline+ doesn’t have to worry about the competition just yet. But when will single-game sports betting officially launch in Ontario?

The story so far: Sports betting in Ontario

A private members bill to reform the criminal code of sports betting was cleared back in June 2021. Single-game sports betting was then later legalized across Ontario in August. Currently, Proline+ is the only online sportsbook available to you; however, that all looks set to change come April 2022.

As it stands, all sports betting odds and comparisons are overseen by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. However, after amendments were made to the AGCO, a new subsidiary was born – focusing heavily on iGaming. The iGaming header focuses on everything relating to online betting, including the sports betting scene that was once solely run by the OLG.

Now, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is working hard, alongside the Government, to finalize an official launch date, whereby many top online sportsbooks can begin to enter the market and present Ontario’s sports betting scene with a great range of online and mobile wagering opportunities.

Prior to the involvement of the OLG and AGCO, the Ontarian sports betting market was predominantly focused offshore. If you are unfamiliar with offshore betting platforms, we should note that many offshore sportsbooks are eligible to operate legally under the Curacao license – a regulating body that is not viewed highly across the sports betting world.

Keeping your funds safe was a primary concern, and the driving force behind the C218. Since the amendments to the bill, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has focused its energy on equipping the Ontario sports betting scene with reputable, reliable, and honest sportsbooks, including BetMGM, theScore, DraftKings, and more.

The projected launch of single-game sports betting provided by private sportsbooks was December 2021. However, after further discussions, it was confirmed that further tweaks to the terms, conditions and final considerations regarding tax revenue were needed. In turn, this has delayed the expected launch date until April 2022.

Generally, the addition of some top private sportsbooks has been met by positive reactions. Not only does it provide an exciting depth to the types of betting experience sports bettors can enjoy but it also adds a great deal of safety, security, and fairness – something that has only recently been amended, thanks to Proline+, in Ontario.

Amanda Brewer of the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA), stated “We have a lot of sportsbooks that have been accessing the Canadian market for well over a decade. They’re coming in, they’re offering sports betting and they are paying no tax, so the provinces don’t collect any revenue, and you have absolutely no guarantees that whomever you’re betting with is offering safe consumer protections.”

Thankfully, this all looks set to change.

What comes next?

It really is an exciting time for you as an Ontarian sports bettor. They are one of five provinces that have officially stated that online wagering and mobile sports betting will be live and legal in 2022. Although April may seem like a long way off, you will still be able to make use of the Proline+ sports betting platform, and single-game wagers across a wealth of popular markets, all powered by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

As further news regarding the Ontario sports betting scene develops, we at GamblingGuy will ensure that you are kept in the know. However, as it stands, it would appear that an April release date is all but set in stone.

While you wait for the official release of Ontario’s private sports betting platforms, why not take advantage of the GamblingGuy operator reviews and comparisons. Our experts have been busy curating reviews on the likes of DraftKings, Caesars, FanDuel, PointsBet, BetMGM, theScore, and BetRivers, in anticipation of their Ontario arrival. Here, you’ll discover which operator is providing the best odds, and the best array of sports betting markets. Although, based on our last visit, we can suggest that all popular US markets are covered.
