MLB suspended San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. for the rest of the season on Friday. Consequently, the suspension inevitably affects the Padres’ odds to win several titles, including the World Series.
This decision was made after Tatis tested positive for taking a “performance-enhancing” steroid called Clostebol, resulting in an 80-game suspension under MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Previously, Tatis suffered an injury in his wrist due to a motorcycle incident, and is expected to return soon. In a statement, Tatis “inadvertently” took the medication that contains Clostebol.

“It turns out that I inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained Clostebol,” Tatis said.
“I should have used the resources available to me in order to ensure that no banned substances were in what I took. I failed to do so.”
Tatis also claimed in the statement that he is “devastated” and would rather be competing alongside his teammates on the field.
“I am completely devastated,” Tatis said in the statement. “There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than on the field competing with my teammates.”
He also expressed his hopes to return to the team in 2023 after serving his suspension, adding that he looks forward to rejoining his teammates on the field in 2023.
Here’s how the absence of Tatis Jr. affects the Padres’ odds in the sports betting market.
According to FOX Bet, the Padres’ World Series chances increased to +1400 after the news was published, after dropping from +2000 to +800 on August 2 following Juan Soto’s trade.
Meanwhile, according to Caesar Sportsbook, the Padres had +1000 odds prior to the Soto trade, dipped to +475 after the move, and then jumped back up to +800 once the suspension news was released.
Tatis had a fantastic season before his suspension, winning his second Silver Slugger award last season after 25 stolen bases and hitting .282/.364./.661 with 97 RBIs.
Tatis Jr.’s suspension means he will play in only 273 of the potential 546 regular-season games.
FOX Sports MLB betting analyst Edward Egros also indicated that the Padres’ absence of Tatis is a “major setback.”
“Never having the caliber of Fernando Tatis Jr. for this season is a major setback to the Padres,” Egros said.
“A basic preseason projection had him hitting 35 home runs this season, which would be tough for any ball club to replicate,” he added.
However, Egros asserted that the Braves’ odds of winning the World Series are higher.
“The Braves’ Statcast numbers prove they are even more dangerous to win the World Series than last year, even more so than the NL Central champion,” Egros said.
“San Diego was in the second wild-card spot, which meant they’d face Atlanta, but now, I have them slipping to the final wild-card spot, with Philadelphia taking over second place.”
Furthermore, Egros stated that he expects Atlanta, Philadelphia, and San Diego to win the NL wild-card slots.
“Dropping a spot but facing, I believe, the Cardinals is better than getting the red-hot Braves,” he explained.
“So, I have Atlanta, Philadelphia and San Diego, in that order, capturing the NL wild-card spots. Avoiding Atlanta in that first-round series is not a bad thing.”
